Fernandina Beach, FL
St. Augustine was fun, but it is time to press on. We left early once again and enjoyed a very quiet and peaceful ride for most of the day. The landscape in this area was sparse but beautiful. There are miles and miles of marsh grass that is captivating to look at.
Our route took us through the entrance to the port of Jacksonville, and fortunately we didn’t see much traffic. We did see some big ships, and we had to navigate around a barge.
The new thing to contend with for the next few days is tides. The difference between low and high tide in this area can be 7 feet. That is a lot. We arrived at Fernandina Harbor Marina at low tide and there was a lot of dry land in the marina. Partly this was due to the low tide, but it was also the result of the two hurricanes that hit the area last year. There is even an alligator that has taken up residence in the marina!
The staff was nice and we were soon headed to explore the town of Fernandina Beach. We rode our bikes to a great state park, and finished the day with some awesome Mexican food.
