St. Simons Island

St. Simons Island

Today was supposed to be a difficult travel day because of the types of water we were going to encounter as well as the potential for trouble. First there are the tides. They create currents. There are areas where the sand at the bottom of the waterway has moved, creating shoals. Take a waterway at low tide that has shoals and you can potentially run aground. So we were careful to leave on a rising tide and arrive at our destination several hours before low tide. First come the pretty morning pictures.

Because of the potential for running aground, in one area we had to go out to the Atlantic Ocean before rounding the edge of the low water area and continuing along the ICW. This is at St. Andrew’s Sound, and it really felt like we were headed out into the ocean.

This all turned out to be academic because the weather was awesome and we had no issues at all.

We arrived at our destination of St. Simons Island and did some afternoon work and a nice bike ride .

We finally had our taste of some bad weather in the evening. A nice sized thunderstorm came right over the marina and gave us a good show for about an hour.
