Oriental, NC

Each day we change our surroundings. That is one thing that makes this trip so cool. We are always discovering new places and meeting interesting people. We left Beaufort and traveled up Adams Creek to the Neuse River. The trip up Adams Creek was tranquil and scenic. We followed three large shrimp boats the whole way.

Shrimp boats go about 7 knots…and so do we.

When we entered the Neuse River there was a big change. The 1 to 2 foot waves were from the west as we traveled north, making it just a bit uncomfortable for the final 30 minutes of the trip. That all changed when we got close to the marina and the protection of the land to the west. Our arrival was very easy as we backed into slip #7 at the Oriental Inn and Marina. These were the first fixed docks we have encountered in quite a while, and I had to lasso a piling like we used to do back in Palmetto!

I love Adirondack chairs!
The motel and pool was our backyard.
Duck, duck, goose!

Oriental is a small town that probably only exists because of the fishing industry. Our tour of the waterfront area was shortened because of a good sized rainstorm that blew through the area, but we were able to visit the Provision company and walk some of the neighborhood streets before having dinner at the Toucan Grill.

Sailing is a big deal here.
Provision Company had some cool stuff!
We liked the artwork on this garage.
Although we aren’t sailors, we still felt welcome.

  1. Don’t miss New Bern, the original capital of NC. We have spent time there several times and taken the trolley tour. It is also on the Neuse.
