Jekyll Island
Our first stop was Jekyll Island. It was a nice 70nm trip from Jacksonville on a perfect weather day. The morning started slow as we had to wait 15 minutes for a railroad bridge to open, but after an Amtrak train sped by the bridge was opened and we were on our way. We had a nice slow boat ride through downtown Jacksonville, and then made up some time in the wide open waterway between downtown and the ICW.
This is the third time to traverse this route, but this time we finally saw a horse on Cumberland Island.
Jekyll Island is not quite as far as St. Simon’s Island where we stayed last trip, but we were invited by some friends to stop and take the island tour. We loved the narrow, tree lined roads and the beautiful beaches. There is a historical area that we didn’t have time to visit on this trip. The whole island is beautiful. There is a campground here, so we plan to return with our travel trailer so we can spend some more time exploring.
