Isle of Hope, GA and Beaufort, SC
These were repeat visits from our trip last year. The trip from Jekyll to Isle of Hope was a long travel day of over 80 miles. We hope to avoid doing these long days, but there aren’t many places to stop on the Georgia coast, and we still aren’t doing the anchor out thing. So that left us with a trip where we departed in the pre-dawn light and didn’t stop until 4pm or so. Overall it was a good trip, with the exception of the required trip through Hell Gate.
We spent the night at Isle of Hope as we watched the weather reports for the following day. We awoke to the sound of rain on the boat so we decided to delay our departure for a couple of hours. The radar showed the rain to be moving to the east, so we departed at a slow enough pace to allow the rain to get far away from us as we traveled up the ICW to Beaufort. This was a shorter day (about 50 miles). The water was calm and the partly cloudy sky was beautiful.
The marina at Beaufort is right on the edge of downtown, and has become one of our favorite stops. We didn’t explore as much on this stop, but I am sure we will be returning for another visit. Last time we didn’t see this so it must be new: they have a replica of the Santa Maria docked right in front of downtown.
