Charleston and Georgetown, SC
We had a calm and relaxing 60 mile ride as we moved from Beaufort to Charleston. It was overcast for much of the day, but the waters were calm and we were able to ride the current for most of the morning, which is always a blessing.
The end of the trip included a bit of stress as we attempted to navigate Charleston Harbor with about 20 other pleasure boats of various sizes scooting back and forth. Our route took us around the tip of downtown Charleston to a marina on the north side, Charleston Maritime Marina.
We had stayed at Charleston Maritime last summer and had spent three uncomfortable nights of waves and wakes. This time it was better during the night, although during the daytime there were many significant wakes that threw us about pretty good. The reason we chose to stay here this time is that there is a grocery store within easy walking distance, and it is always fun to walk through downtown Charleston and see the sights. As it turned out, the evening was much more calm than when we visited last year. In the morning we woke early and headed for Georgetown. There was some light drizzle as we departed, but pretty soon the rain stopped and we had a mostly overcast day as we drove up the ICW.
We arrived at Georgetown at around 1pm. I had reserved a slip at the Harborwalk Marina, so I called when we were close and got instructions for docking. After tying up the boat we found a restaurant in the downtown area and then walked through the historic neighborhoods. The marina in Georgetown is completely different from the one in Charleston, and we really enjoy walking through the little town and seeing the beautiful homes. Last year’s post about Georgetown
