Lake Ontario & Clayton, NY
The forecast for the morning was for minimal waves and light wind. There was no fog either. So we set off before 6am to take advantage of the situation. You never know how things will change over the span of a few hours.
This was one of the longest open water crossings we have made. It took almost 5 hours to cross the lake. There was a small amount of waves, which wouldn’t normally be a problem except they were from the southeast. With our northbound heading this caused a somewhat uncomfortable ride as the following seas rolled us just enough to be bothered. Still it was a perfect day so no complaints from me.
We made it across the lake and to the St. Lawrence river and the 1000 Islands. I can see why so many people love this area. There is beauty all around. Tycoons of a bygone era had built massive vacation mansions on some of these islands. So the history we learned about the region was very interesting.
We docked at Clayton without any issues and headed into town to find some pizza. We had lunch at the Wood Boat Brewery and shared a really good wood fired pizza. As we sat by the window of the restaurant we noticed that there was an event happening at the Antique Boat Museum.
As it happens this was the weekend for the Antique Boat Show in Clayton. So we finished our lunch and bought tickets for the show. This included entry into the museum. We saw all sorts of boats and toured several. There was an auction scheduled for the following day but as we were not in the market for a wooden boat project we decided one day would be plenty for us.
I was very impressed by the quality of the museum and the variety of the boats on display. Eventually we (Melissa) got tired of looking at boats and motors and canoes and sails and all sorts of other stuff, so we headed for the Ice Cream shop and then back to the boat.
This is the second boat show that we accidentally happened into. As you may remember we saw the Georgetown Wooden Boat Show last summer.
As it was a Friday night there were lots of boaters out on the docks of the marina until pretty late at night, but they were mostly well behaved and we were able to get some sleep expecting another early day.
