Lakefield
There is a farmer’s market in Peterborough on Saturdays, so we took a walk into town. There are nice walking/biking trails along the water. The lockmaster had given us a map showing the trails, which was helpful. We found the farmer’s market and stocked up on some fruits and vegetables, but most importantly we restocked our supply of butter tarts!
The first lock was the one we had spent the night next to. The next one was the Peterborough Lift Lock. This is a hydraulic lock with two chambers that lift or lower boats sort of like a giant elevator. Boats are loaded into a bathtub-like chamber and the whole chamber is raised. At the same time another chamber at the top is filled with boats and lowered. It was probably the easiest locking experience so far because nothing moves in the chamber.
The remainder of the trip was a series of regular locks. We ended the day at a beautiful spot at the top of the Lakefield lock.
We had a good time using our dinghy to explore the area.
