Portage

Portage

We had an easy trip to our next stop along the Trent/Severn canal. This day was about 20 miles, and much of it was through very narrow canals.

The narrow canals meant that we had to sound our horn when going around corners. It also meant that bigger boats had to announce their position on the radio. We passed three or four such large boats along this route, and while it was a tight squeeze, we were able to negotiate the channel without incident.

One of the five locks of the day was another hydraulic lift lock like Peterborough. This one was at Kirkfield, and the main difference was that we were going down instead of up.

The channel in this area reminded us a lot of the Dismal Swamp. There wasn’t a lot to look at but it was interesting and a bit stressful because of the tight quarters and shallow waters.

We spent the night at an isolated spot between the two locks at Portage and Thorah. This was another very secluded spot that we have learned to enjoy.

Arrived at our destination for the day
This is pretty awesome!
