Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island

The trip over to the island was easy and enjoyable. We entered the harbor after two tour boats had left so there wasn’t a lot of traffic to deal with. Mackinac Island does not have any motorized vehicles. Everyone either walks or rides bikes or horses or horse-drawn carriages. This makes for a unique environment in today’s world.

After getting tied up at our slip we headed over to eat lunch at the Pink Pony. We then spent most of the day exploring the island. After walking back and forth along the touristy shops we got our bikes off the boat and headed out on a counterclockwise path around the island. There is a paved bike road that runs around the entire perimeter of the island. The entire trip is a little over eight miles in length. If you stay on the main road it will take you through town and then through the state park, with the water’s edge always in sight.

When we finished riding around the island we took a walk up the hill towards the Grand Hotel. This is the hotel that is used as the setting for the 80s movie Somewhere in Time. The walk took about 30 minutes. We stopped for ice cream at the hotel and then walked back to town to take pictures of the post office and other interesting places. We decided to take another bike ride around the island and then we found a pizza place for dinner.

This was a very enjoyable stop. About the only negative was that the marina was not very well protected against waves from the lake, so the boat bounced around quite a bit. Fortunately the wind settled down late in the evening.

  1. HI, Very interesting trip this season. It would appear you are making great time. Can you give an estimate of time & stops along LK Mi east coast & are you visiting LK MI west coast? Would really like the opportunity to visit & see the boat.
